We all raise our children with fond hopes that one day, they will become someone great and excel in some field.
Yet, the common parental strategy is mostly rewarding desired behavior and reprimanding not so desired behavior. Thus, the child is modified for lollipop conditioning plan and the same philosophy is carried to workplace by managers.
While manipulation is somewhat acceptable strategy, it can become counterproductive in the long run.
Drawing from real life experiences , Dr.Sarma demonstrates that people actually do superior work
when they are not enticed with money. Rewards to change people’s behavior are similarly becoming ineffective in the technology-driven global work culture.Inducements to propel people to superior
performance only makes them lose interest in the task. If an organization relies on heavy incentives, worse things happen and it breeds greediness as it happened with Lehman or Enron.
Rewards can produce similar effect as punishment. Both are in away like weapons of mass destruction. Many managements /managers just don’t seem to figure out or dont know how to create the wow factor though every CEO wants his company to be a Google or Apple. Some of them even can't believe that employees need to be motivated to be engaged.
This is wherethis book will help in getting an understanding of the psychology behind rewards.
Though veryfew would disagree with value of recognition, a mere forty percent of the managers surveyed actually recognize their subordinates frequently and consistently and it just does not occur to open their heart for the remaining sixty percent though they seem to believe in the power of recognition.
The apathy may also be due to the ignorance of not knowing what and how to do.This book provides the Conceptual background and the practical details in simple easy to digest way. This book also exploresfew forms of recognition and harvests the power of positive stroking. Included are the case studies and examples of effective recognition plans.
While detailing best principles and practices, book also provides a definitive overview of the whole process.

Worth every word of the read, varied aspects Doc projects to the reader gives a good perspective. I will recommend this my colleagues which could be a reference material for rewarding their employees and teams!
Great book with so many real life experiences that show how rewards motivates human behavior. One of the best quotes I could connect was about the African culture of Ubuntu meaning humanness - a group of kids when put to race for a bag of chocolates decide to join hand and run together without competing. Thus resulting in sharing the goodies with all.
With many such varied examples, Doc gives an excellent view on how rewards should be designed for effective implementation in the organization.
Great read on Employee Reward and motivation, comprehensive on the subject reflecting the decades of experience of author in the field, very useful tips for instrumenting an effective reward system in an organization. Worth referring whenever a new employee reward system is in consideration.
Excellent information on reward v/s motivation v/s management v/s employees. I was very impressed by the chapter on ESOP specially how it started in Silicon Valley and how it is being implemented in India.

Hopefully, the next edition will include chapter on rewards and motivation in an environment where low-to-medium skilled work will be automated. Dr. E. J. Sarma is well qualified to address this issue in the next edition.
